Short biography

I am a composer und music theory teacher. Since 2005 I have been teaching as a professor for music theory at the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule Düsseldorf (Statal college of music). I grew up in the province of south Hessia (near Heidelberg). In 1985 I began my studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. Composition with György Ligeti, music theory with Wolfgang-A. Schultz, Christoph Hohlfeld a.o., piano with Sieglind Krämer. As a composer I had several performances at international festivals (Gaudeamus Amsterdam, Donaueschingen a.o.) and won some composition prizes. A provisional list of my works can be found here. As a comedian I performed all over Germany and the other German speaking countries with several colleagues. Next to teaching music theory (until 2005 in Hamburg) I taught song interpretation for actors at a drama school. Due to my teaching my career as a comedian is limping a little bit at the moment, but you may still find new dates at www.poppschutz.de.

I have published some of my articles and teaching material here. Unfortunately only in German. At the moment I plan a publication about theory of melody in English together with my colleague Hendrik Purwins from Universita Pompeu Fabbra Barcelona.
